PUNK ROCK FRIDAY WITH THE MENZINGERS!

BOMB THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!

Chuck Ragan Interview Part 2

In this part, chuck talks about topics in his song and the new HOT WATER MUSIC record, check it out!

WWR: A lot of the older bands I talk to such as yourself, lagwagon, NUFAN etc, I always pose the question do you still actively follow the punk rock scene? And where do you think its gone in the last 5 years since its died down a lot in England especially!

CR: Yea I always feel like i'm completely saturated with music and sometimes a little over saturated to me I feel punk rock to me has always been more of an ethic rather than a style or a fad or even a genre, punk rock to me when I learnt about it 24 years ago was a completely different thing to what it is nowadays, it has some of the same elements but it was more frowned upon more than anything else.
You weren't accepted at school, we just weren't you know the punks , the skateboarders we were the ones that were always hassled, it was cool to us but it wasn't cool to anybody else ha!
Over the years as i've grown older i've believed a lot of those ethics are still there with some people, and some of those people who I believe still hold those ethics may not be considered from a outside perspective punk rock people at all! Some of the most punk rock people I know are more farmers and ranchers, its more about this DIY ethic of knowing how to grow their own food and knowing how to hunt and fish and live off of the land and be completely self sufficient. Growing up when I learnt about punk rock it was more about rebelling against the norm, rebelling against society, church and school and all the rules, and I was this 12/13 year old kid that happened to know everything in the world! So for me the best part about it one way or another there will always be an underground and they'll always be that undeniable ethic of doing things yourself and maintaining and sustaining on your own.

WWR: When you play live you tend to have a lot of stories behind your songs, I love this because its educational and its not just a song, where do these tend to come from? Books? Family? Friends?

CR : All of the above really, i've just always felt like song writing for me is something that I always more or less have to do rather than a choice, I say that meaning its like therapy to me its more or less like someone keeping a journal or a diary its something I need to do to get it off my chest, I do it for that first and foremost and I love releasing records.
I love to make these journals and diary's into a song and get them out and I feel like when I put them on a record and I them 'out' away from me its almost like i'm able to step forward with my own life and choice.

WWR: So essentially your records are history books?

CR: Absolutely , as far as where the stories come from think about what effects you everyday from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed, all these people that you see, the positive things, the negative things just everything you've faced throughout the day just like day to day life.
With your family, job and society to me i've always felt that if something, anything effects you in an extremely positive or negative way most likely for me its worth getting it off my chest and telling a story about it.

WWR: Last question, what's going on with hot water music at the moment? I know you've done random shows, but George is playing for against me etc is there plans to record?

CR : yea we are actually writing a new record, so that's kind of new and its fun and the best part about it for us is that its like the beginning again.
We don't have any contracts no label , we have no managers no one telling us when and where, even though we have always done a good job in doing what the hell we want to, ha! But still it feels like we are not expected to do anything and it definitely got to that point when your this band and your going and you put out a record and you tour on it and you let everybody know yea we are going back in the studio, everybody's waiting for the next record and the next tour and there's that pressure there and for us.
The main focus now is just to write new songs and when it feels right and ready to record we will do it , and when we feel like getting a label we will do it.

WWR: do you feel records come out better without the pressure and having no time limits?

CR : yea if we just relax and we do exactly what we want to do it'l come out great, and if it doesn't at least it will sound good to us aha! No one else may like it but as long as your happy that's fine! Ha ha!

WWR : Ha! OK Chuck huge thanks for your time and we shall see you soon

CR : My pleasure I appreciate it!

Exclusive Chuck Ragan Interview part 1

So This past week we had the pleasure of sharing a drink with gruff punk rock legend, Chuck Ragan. He is currently on tour in europe supporting The Gaslight Anthem so make sure you get out to a show!

CHUCK RAGAN INTERVIEW

WWR : So we are here with the man himself MR Chuck Ragan, how are you today sir?

CR: Very well, thanks for having me!

WWR : il crack straight into the questions/chat

CR: Sure fire away

WWR : So right now your on tour with the gaslight anthem and a few months ago were with frank turner, do you find these shorts of tours beneficial as your playing to a different crowd every night compared to your own shows and in America?

CR : Sure, always. I think that's the case for any artist or band doing support slots, that's the key that's what your trying to do, to have a chance and opportunity to share your music with a audience who have no idea who you are, don't care who you are and just to get out there and have that chance to put your music out there.
Whether they like it or not that is a whole other story, some people care about that some people don't, for me I respect the fact that my musics not for everybody and I have always felt that way, if people get something from it that's wonderful, if they don't that's fine also there's plenty of other artists out there!
We feel really blessed to have the opportunity's we have over here, the UK has always been wonderful for us from hot water music to the solo stuff, we've got a lot of really great friends over here, nowadays we come to different towns and see friends and feel comfortable and familiar, we feel really lucky you know.

WWR : Is this your first time in Southampton? I know you played with hot water music years ago in a youth centre, do you remember that at all?

CR : Ha! yea vaguely, I thought I had played at this venue at some point, it looks really familiar, but im not sure when.

WWR: Would you say its fair to say that you as Chuck Ragan is a follow on from Rumbleseat after that became defunct?

CR : Yea sure, somewhat but I was playing that sort of music before Chris and I ever started Rumbleseat, the stuff that im doing now isn't that far of a stretch from music ive been writing and playing for past 17, 18 years. I just never put as much focus on it as hot water music was always the main focus and not as many people cared ( laughs ).
So this music for me has been something ever since we (hot water music) took our indefinite hiatus some years back, I never stopped writing and one day my wife said hey you should be recording some of this stuff and I said alright! Then sideonedummy wanted to put some records out, so I stopped building houses and put more attention into writing and playing music , but yea ( rumbleseat) is some what similar I've somewhat progressed or least I hope so! Ha if not im doing something wrong ( laughs )

WWR : So your doing this split with Brian ( gaslight anthem ) is it going to be full band or is it back to bare bones for you?

CR : Yea its not even much of a split we are doing a full length record, so far we've just been writing songs on our own and sending them back and forth and singing on each others songs and playing on each others songs, the game plan is to try and record some stuff on this tour we will see what happens and if we are able and have time we will write together which will be wonderful, he is a brilliant brilliant song writer, I love his fire and his energy he's a good fella all round.

WWR : Do you feel you have some years more experience when it comes to writing?

CR : To be honest I don't look at it that way at all, its all relative in time. These boys have been trucking so hard in the past 5, 6 years especially you know they've seen and done more than most bands will ever do in a lifetime.

WWR : Do you think the revival tour will ever come to the UK?

CR : Absolutely! Yeah, we attempted to put one together last year, but we got sidetracked because of all our other schedules. Its been tough because my wife and I basically co ordinate that whole tour and we have a little help from some friends here and there, for the most part my wife and I make the schedule and the decisions but just doing that and the solo stuff and balancing simple everyday home life and now hot water music is doing more stuff, its quite a juggling act.
We've been really excited to bring it over here, im not sure exactly when were going to be doing it but we are planning it for 2011 as far as what month im not sure right now, we are getting ready to lock in the US dates and the Australian dates and once that's locked in we will have a idea, we will do the UK, Europe then Canada then just repeat the cycle

WWR : With Ben Nichols and Tim Barry as well?

CR: Possibly ( smiles ) we will see what happens! I can tell you , you wont be disappointed. A lot of the people that are good friends and artists i've never played with have shown interest in the tour, I mean if its half the tour that it seems like its going to be it will be amazing.

WWR : When you first sat down to record the 'blueprint sessions' did you ever plan to tour worldwide and release as much as you have?

CR : No I didn't, I wasn't thinking about touring at the time. I didn't want to tour at all. I was actually trying to get away from touring and my wife and I were actually planning on starting a custom home building business just on my own as a independent contractor & builder and then the music started doing better and we were able to get out.
Before I was making more money at home with my trade and then I would have to lose money to go play some music which was always fine and then it started getting a little better where we could make ends meet but the last thing I wanted to do was to get back into the machine of it all , the only thing that kind of rectified it for me you could say was that I was doing it solo and my wife and I could make the schedule and we were making our own rules and dictating our life.
It was a completely different feeling than being in a band because hot water music just got to this point where it was wonderful, we had great times and great shows and everything but definitely after a while we had the label and managers and all these people on payroll and all this going on, then you don't dictate your own schedule any more your just a piece of the puzzle.
There's pros and cons to it, its wonderful because you have this big family kind of thing but at the same time personal space disappears, personal agenda disappears, you miss birthdays and funerals and births and anniversary's you name it, its just extremely taxing.
So it was different then when I kicked it off again in my own way, but I had no idea we would have done as much as we have.

WWR : I remember the first time you came over you played by yourself, was there a point you decided to go full band?
No not necessarily I still play by myself quite a bit, tonight its just Jon Gaunt and I. The Cool thing about it in a non selfish way but kind of a selfish way (laughs) is having the control of being able to say i'm going to do this show by myself or get just John or get a whole bunch of people and just go for it. Its just nice to be able to have those options to me it feels more creative and free all round.

On a Clear Day You Can See Manhattan by Blake Schwarzenbach

THIS IS SIMPLY A REPOST FROM THE FORGETTERS OWN BLOG, THEY HAVE A FULL ALBUM / DOUBLE 7 INCH OUT THIS WEEK - THE FORGETTERS ARE FRONTED BY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FRONTMEN IN PUNK ROCKS RECENT HISTORY THE VOCALIST OF SUCH BANDS AS JAWBREAKER & JETS TO BRAZIL

It is the eve of 9/11 in New York, the bat signal has been launched into the sky at Ground Zero, reminding us all to feel bad for some more time, to haunt us with the question, "Is anyone actually going to turn up?" It is an appropriately lonely beacon, catching you unawares as you round a corner at dusk, mired as you might be in your own evening concerns. Suddenly there it is: the twin columns of light silently blasting upwards into the void without words. If I may attempt an approximation of a not uncommon response to such a thing: (1) Surprise (“Ah, here it is again!”); (2) Self-examination (“Does this inspire any kind of feeling in me? It’s pretty, but quite divorced from reality”); (3) Needling guilt (“Have I changed as much as I could in the last decade?”); (4) Simmering resentment (“Don’t tell me how or when to feel”); (5) Wariness (“Here comes the punditry and the day of angry flags”); (6) Resignation (“We are lost; we can’t even handle sadness adequately.”)
Now look, I would actually prefer the soft jolt of this nighttime beacon to all the tearful, vengeful talking that will ensue – it actually seems commensurate with the events themselves: no words, seen from afar, it just happens and demands some kind of reflection, and ultimately it leaves us searching and feeling adrift. Unfortunately, and I think this is because we are an impressionable and deliberate people, the opening that such a spectral image provides is going to be immediately filled in with a variety of narratives. We will be told to be unwavering, to dig our heels in and find our mettle, to never forget; and we will congratulate ourselves on the enormity of the event that we have withstood – in a manner that I suspect has been found rightly offensive to the many people and students of history who know that “thousands dead” is an almost daily occurrence throughout the world. That fact doesn’t need to diminish anything. In fact if anything it ought to be (to borrow from current discourse) a kind of “message force multiplier”: We are a part of this vulnerable world. Or, perhaps, we were, for a moment, before wrenching ourselves apart from it and asserting our role as the standard-bearer for law and conduct. But this has been said before and need not be repeated here at much length – that we squandered an enormous amount of good will and collective empathy by lashing out in every direction at things deemed un-American. What concerns me now is that, over the course of the last decade, this battle has been brought home with laser-like intensity. Foreign policy has become domestic policy. The enemy is no longer out there; the enemy is in our midst, among us, laying eggs and taking root.
What distinguishes this September in New York from all the others is the sudden outcry against the proposed Islamic Community Center in our city’s downtown. This was not an issue when it was proposed and it is a project that has the approval of the mayor and the downtown community, to say nothing of the genuine interest it has sparked in many around the world. Again the world is watching and praying for something resembling common sense and basic humanism in America; something that says we don’t hate you or consider you to be a lesser form of citizen. Think of Obama’s June 2009 speech in Cairo – think whatever you will of it – at the very least it promised equanimity and acknowledgment of Islam as a legitimate social and spiritual entity in the world and in this country, specifically. No more, but no less, than Christianity or Judaism or Hinduism or Buddhism. Think, then, of all the arguments for bringing democracy and freedom to Iraq and Afghanistan – think what you will of them – they were the best possible outcome that Afghans and Iraqis might hope for as a result of foreign occupation. If we can hold these things in mind then the message of censuring this project becomes patently offensive: We will seize and upend your country for your right to make your own decisions – as partners in peace – but we will not countenance a social center for your community in our midst. (And let us put to rest the hyperbolic notion that this is either at the center of Ground Zero or a simple mosque. This is a community center in the neighborhood that happens to have a huge need for development, in a very closely compacted city, with a significant population of Muslims and other people who would be interested to visit it.)
Yet perhaps we could go even further than this by assuming the argument of the project’s opponents. It is indeed close to Ground Zero, a site where the so-called two disparate worlds of East and West were brought together in a horrific, unsparing moment. And now here is a distinguished figure from the Islamic world, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, who has repeatedly condemned the September 11th attacks as a violent aberration of, and not representative of, Islam, proposing a center for understanding and outreach in an area still visibly unhealed from the event. People rush in to fill holes. Here is a modest proposal to occupy a small amount of space in an area that has been consumed by ignorance. So, we might ask, “Why shouldn’t we want such a resource in downtown New York?” Arguably it will hold answers for many of the questions that may linger about the attacks, but more importantly it will provide a place of growth and empowerment for a community that is as legitimate and entitled as any other in our country. Does one stop a “clash of civilizations” by refusing any dialogue between the two? Imagine the message of disappointment and resentment such a refusal would send to the Arab world. Or, put another way, would you rather have a library, pool, 9/11 memorial, contemplative space and day care in downtown New York or would you rather have a Burlington Coat Factory (or a Staples or a Starbucks)?
I know that when people are critical of memorial holidays it can come off as churlish and arch, and I don't want to be that anymore; I don’t want to be part of the culture of complaint, the whinging left that can never be happy unless it is battling upwards against nefarious superpowers. So I would suggest this: let us be sad for once and re-affirm our commitment to being alive while we can. Again, I know it is unpretty to conceive of tragedy as opportunity, but I am afraid that such a determination was made almost at the moment of impact (arguably well before impact, if anyone bothers to read the minutes of the cabinet meetings in Washington.) So again we are confronted with an opportunity. What stories about ourselves do we want to believe and put forth historically? What do we want to remember someday and what will make us wince? Do we want to be remembered for unconditionally defending freedom or for defensive incarceration and exclusion? I think very few people in this country can honestly look back over the past decade and feel a sense of pride – the ransacking of the public trust and the plundering of foreign soil is simply too transparent, too vast to go undocumented. But because we are a plucky sort – and this is what the rest of the world finds maddening and lamentable but also terribly endearing about us – we can begin as if we were free. We can forget some of the terrible, cynical decisions we have made and remember the truth that is self-evident to anyone who sits seriously with the idea of an indivisible human community: to do to any other only what we would do for ourselves, an idea that is held in common between all national constitutions and books of prayer.

Sunday 9 May 2010

We are back from Groezrock 2010!

Last weekend we hit up the 19th annual Groezrock festival in Meerhout, Belgium.
We got some great Interviews and photos and a slew of exclusive video content coming soon!

Huge thanks to everyone at Groezrock 2010, especially Hans, Thomas & Christophe!

In the meantime enjoy the first of our posts with The Swellers!

Off With Their heads New album / Video

It was during Off With Their Heads’ 2009 tour with Against Me when the band got the call from Epitaph’s owner/president Brett Gurewitz saying that he was a fan of the band.

“Off With Their Heads might be the best punk band going right now, Epitaph needs them; music needs them,” says Gurewitz.

“I remember the first time I'd heard of Epitaph,” Young adds. “It was when I was in junior high and Rancid had just released Let’s Go. I saw the video, and immediately went and bought the record. I got into the compilations, and that started me on the road to finding all these great aggressive catchy punk bands. Living in a small farm town, I had never been exposed to this kind of music before, and from there I learned about punk. I guess you could say Epitaph was my gateway into everything that I would wind up becoming. For that reason alone, I am ecstatic to be a part of one of the biggest influences on my life.”

Off With Their Heads are well on their way to carving out their own punk rock story with their modern take on vintage punk fueled anthems. As the band begins the next chapter of their career they took the time to record their best album to date.

Produced by Off With Their Heads and Jacques Wait at the Terrarium in Minneapolis, In Desolation is 34 minutes of non-stop gut wrenching honesty. Singer Ryan Young’s candid lyrics about life’s misadventures, stress, drugs, love, death and everything between add a raw surly edge to the band’s full-throttle music.

“This record is kind of a collective mix of all the styles we've done in the past,” Young explains. “Everything from aggression to sappy bullshit, because that’s who I am! This is going to be the record for people who like the whole spectrum of what we do.”

From its first track, “Drive,” a petal-to-the-metal opener about Young’s incessant habit of over thinking things and becoming his own worst critic, to the harsh reality of OD’ing on the sobering yet rowdy song “Trying to Breath” and the explosive middle-finger-in-the-air sing along “Their Own Medicine,”
In Desolation is authentic punk rock to its core from a working band who lives and breathes it every day.

When it comes to touring virtually year round it isn’t a choice as much as it’s a lifestyle for Off With Their Heads, and after years on the road the band has finally taken a brief break.

“Until the record comes out in June, we won’t be doing any shows,” says Young. “That’s the longest stretch in almost two years that we haven’t been on the road. People ask us how it feels to finally get to relax. I'm fucking bored. The other guys are bored. We want to get back out. Not to further our band, but just because we love doing it and are used to it. The title In Desolation comes from a lyric in the song “ZZYZX” on the record. I chose that because after years constantly on the road, being 100 percent by myself sounded pretty rad.”

In June Off With Their Heads will once again pack the RV and head out on another indefinite tour strapped with one of the year’s most engaging punk rock records and the sheer will to keep the wheels turning.

Joey Cape Of Lagwagon
http://www.myspace.com/joeycape
The man himself the legend of punk rock, one below fat mike. The lead vocalist from legends LAGWAGON is coming to town with hair spiked and Gatorade & vodka in tow, expect all the hits as well as solo album material and maybe even some Bad Astronaut for good measure.

After being on tours with the greatest in punk rock history ( NOFX, BAD RELIGION, AFI, PENNYWISE and then some..) and playing in acts such as ME FIRST AND THE GIMMIE GIMMIES, LAGWAGON, AFTERBURNER & BAD ASTRONAUT this is a night not to be missed!
And now After many years of fronting influential punk band LagwagonJoey Capereleased his first full length solo acoustic albumBridgein October 2008. Drawing inspiration from the candle lit emotion of Kill Rock Stars era Elliott Smith and an upbringing steeped in acoustic acts such as Simon & Garfunkel and Cat Stevens; Cape’s acoustic efforts stand up on their own and finally introduce him as a promising addition to the pantheon of great American singer-songwriters.

Tony Sly Of No Use For A Name
http://www.myspace.com/tonyslymusic
If that wasn't enough another of FATWRECKCHORDS greatest exports will be in town! Mr Sly lead vocalist and songwriter from pop punk rock heroes NO USE FOR A NAME, after the historical Split CD with joey cape himself back in 2004 it makes perfect sense for a healthy addition to this night we may even see some duo's?
He is currently tucked away writing his 1st solo full length record so expect great songs from the split CD plus more surprises!

Jon SnodGrass Of Drag The River
http://www.myspace.com/jonsnodgrass
This man needs no introduction always a huge part of the infamous Revival tour in the USA featuring CHUCK RAGAN, MIKE HALE, AUSTIN LUCAS, BEN NICHOLS and more.
He brings he blend of country punk rock to Southampton via Suburban Home records.
Since the premature dissolution of Drag the River in late 2007, Jon Snodgrass has continued to do what he has always done: write and record great music. His full length 10 track (plus the entire album over again as 1 track with alternate versions of nearly every song) album is some of Jon’s greatest work. You might think you know what this album sounds like, but I think it might surprise you a bit. The album incorporates the hard-edged rock you expect from Armchair Martian with the more rootsy sounds you might expect to hear with Drag the River and the resulting album is an album I have no problem calling a masterpiece.
