Teenage BottleRocket Review

Teenage Bottlerocket - Mutilate Me

(Fat Wreck Chords 2011)

Mutilate Me is the new EP from Teenage Bottlerocket, a pop punk band from Wyoming who have recently been described as the only redeeming feature of Descendents’ recent London show. TBR offer a brand of pop-punk from the past. Their resemblance to The Ramones, Screeching Weasel and The Riverdales is utterly undeniable. This little EP is the perfect introduction into the band; the two original songs on the record really represent what the band is about, snotty singing with hooked filled riffs holding together three chord wonders that make it impossible not to tap your feet to.

Despite its horror punk connotations it’s actually a really good little EP. Spanning less than six minutes, it’s over almost as soon as it starts but commands a few replays. The opening track “Mutilate Me” is as catchy as you’d expect but has the staying power that makes you wish it was part of an album rather than a ridiculously short EP. “Punk Rock House of Horrors” is everything I love about Teenage Bottlerocket; almost falsetto high vocals, fast and hook driven, it’s definitely the favourite of the three songs. The third any final track of Mutilate Me is a cover of Henchman by Bad Religion. It seems that Teenage Bottlerocket have managed the almost impossible task of making a fast Bad Religion song even faster than the original.

All in all this a great EP and well worth a listen, but it doesn’t live up for the band’s latest and greatest full length “They Came From The Shadows”.
